Review: Evelyn’s Journal

Evelyn's JournalEvelyn’s Journal by M.J. Gardner
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

In Evelyn’s Journal a young girl is tempted into a relationship with her piano teacher. But she soon finds out he’s asking for a lot more than her attention. He wants her blood. To drink. He says it’s their little secret and soon enough Evelyn realises: he’s a vampire. As a final parting gift, he leaves her with immortality and strange things begin to happen.

What’s good about this book is its unpredictability. On the surface it looks like yet another vampire story, but early on in the novel Evelyn’s character, family troubles and her search for a true identity all add depth to the plot.

Let’s be honest. I’m not a fan of vampires. But Evelyn’s Journal seems to be about more than that. It’s a story about a girl trying to find her place in the world among the living, the dead, the undead. A coming-of-age kind of story where we get to follow Evelyn’s journey through her own eyes as she discovers that the world is a lot more awake than she has ever imagined.
